The best time to be in Florida is when the spiderwort, a variety of tradescantia blooms. It is typically covered with honey bees and native bees gathering its abundant pollen, and this year is no exception.
Our drought has unfortunately meant that the spiderwort isn’t quite as lush as usual, but it is still a welcome and cheerful sight in the early morning, dressed up in shining drops of dew.
If you aren’t an early riser, however, you will probably never notice this common plant, because its lovely and brightly colored triune flowers only stay unfurled in the morning and are tucked away by noon.
