This is a young orb weaver that sports a startling neon green spot on its back. It’s the first I have seen here, probably because during the day this type of spider  sleeps in a leaf that it has rolled up and secured with webbing. 

This one selected the leaf of a native coral bean plant and while puttering around my garden I spotted the abnormal looking leaf and decided to unroll it to find out what was inside. I expected a caterpillar similar to the ones that roll up in the tomato leaves, but to my surprise I found this spider, which was probably surprised too. But it took it in stride and didn’t bolt.
